Details
David Millward Davies was born in Gwaelod-y-Garth and educated at Pontypridd Grammar School before entering the Welsh National School of Medicine where he graduated BSc in 1941 and MB, ChB in 1944. His first appointment was at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, under the wartime Emergency Medical Service. He then served with the RAMC in Germany as graded orthopaedic surgeon from 1947 to 1949. On demobilisation his orthopaedic training continued at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, the Prince of Wales General Hospital, and at Morriston where he became a senior registrar in 1955 before appointment as consultant orthopaedic surgeon to the West Glamorgan Health Authority. David Davies had a reputation as a very hard-working and conscientious clinician, devoted to the care of his patients and greatly liked by his people. He was a sociable person, devoted to local activities and especially interested in cricket, singing and amateur dramatics. As a medical officer he once accompanied a test team to Australia and the Morriston Orpheus Choir to North America. One of his chief interests was the Swansea Little Theatre where he played many parts but most enjoyed his appearance in Under Milk Wood. When he died in 1984, after a short illness, he was survived by his wife Marie and his five children, Sian, John, Sheila, Fiona and James.
