Details
Collins Louis Greaves, the son of Ernest Collins Greaves and Sophia Constance (née Currell), was born at Lota, Queensland, on 20 July, 1922. After education at Brisbane Grammar School he worked for a short while in a hospital laboratory which fired his interest in medicine. After one year at the University of Queensland Medical School he joined the Australian Navy and was sent to radar school before spending four years as a radar officer in the Pacific. On demobilisation with the rank of Lieutenant he was persuaded to continue his medical studies at Wesley College, in the University of Sydney. He graduated with honours and was appointed resident medical officer at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1951. Two years later he spent 18 months at the Repatriation General Hospital, in Concord, before travelling to England for postgraduate study. After securing the FRCS of both England and Edinburgh he returned to Australia in 1956. He was then appointed honorary orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Prince Alfred and at the Paramatta Hospital (later absorbed by Westmead Hospital). He was an active supporter of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, serving on its executive committee and also on the New South Wales Board of Studies. After giving up active surgery Collins Greaves developed a large medico-legal practice. He made many contributions to the Medico-legal Society of New South Wales and was its President at the time of his death. He married Margaret Fletcher in 1952 and they had three sons. His hobbies were model making and sailing and he was getting his boat in order when he died suddenly on November 21, 1987, aged 65. He was survived by his wife and children.
