Details
Nathaniel Allan Miller, the elder of twins, was the son of Thomas Henry Miller, a medically qualified dental surgeon, and of Janet Allan Miller (née Cook), the daughter of Alexander Cook, MD, FRCS Ed. His twin brother, Alec, became a consultant physician. Nathaniel was born at Preston, Lancashire, on 1 November 1902 and was educated at Old College, Windermere, and Marlborough College, before entering St Thomas's Hospital where he qualified in 1923. There are no details of his early years after qualification but he was presumably in general practice at Windsor and became assistant surgeon at King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor, in 1933, and surgeon to that hospital in November 1939, shortly after passing the FRCS. During the second world war he served with the RAMC in 225 Parachute Field Ambulance, 6th Airborne Division, and was demobilised with the rank of Major. He married Molly Drew in 1930. She was the daughter of A J Drew FRCS, who at his death was the oldest Fellow of the College (see *Lives of the Fellows* 1952-1964, pages 114-5) and they had two sons, the elder of whom is a consultant physician. When he died on 21 June, 1987, in Burton-on-Trent General Hospital, he was survived by his sons, Nigel and Julian, his wife having died in October 1985.
