His father, Clement Treves Neve, FRCS (qv *Lives of the Fellows* 1930-1951) was a surgeon, and his mother, Elsie Mabel, née Pedley, was the daughter of Richard Pedley, a medically qualified dental surgeon. His father's three uncles were Sir Frederick Treves, and Arthur and Ernest Neve, both Fellows of the Edinburgh College. Richard was educated at Epsom College and obtained a scholarship and a Kitchiner scholarship to Guy's Hospital. After medical service in the RAF, where he served as a flight lieutenant from 1946 to 1948, and gaining the FRCS, he emigrated to British Columbia and was appointed to Kimberley and District Hospital. He married Elizabeth ('Libby') Hunt in 1946 and they had one son and two daughters. His hobbies were breeding and training horses, skiing, shooting, big game hunting, fishing and photography. He died on 12 March 1995 from motor neurone disease.
