Details
Bruce Geaney was a respected orthopaedic surgeon in Toowoomba, Australia. He was born in Brisbane on 1 November 1926 and educated at Slade Anglican Church Grammar School in Warwick. He went on to study medicine at Queensland University, graduating in 1949. He was a keen sportsman, swimming for the university and playing in the hockey team. Around this time he also volunteered as a surf lifesaver. He did his residency in Cairns, and then went to London to study for his FRCS and complete his training in orthopaedic surgery. Returning to Australia, he took up the position of superintendent at the Toowoomba Hospital. He was appointed as part-time surgeon at the hospital in 1961, going into private practice. Geaney was a dedicated surgeon who touched many lives, both in the public health system and in private practice. Although he retired in 1987, he was still seeing patients up until his death. In his 40 years at Toowoomba, he estimated that he had operated on 20,000 to 25,000 patients. He would often forego private elective surgery to operate on trauma patients for no remuneration. He was also highly regarded for his training of junior surgeons and surgical trainees throughout his career. He married Myrtle Furness early in his career. Just four years before his death he married for a second time, to Celie Wilkinson, with whom he spent some of the happiest years of his life. He had three sons (Paul, Barry and David) and three daughters (Jennifer, Lisa and Victoria). There is one granddaughter, Breanna. Having overcome a difficult illness in 1997, he died suddenly on 2 October 2002.
