After qualifying in Sri Lanka (then called Ceylon), Hiary Kumarasinghe worked as a house officer in the General Hospital for four years and then as a registrar in the University Hospital, before going to England to specialise in surgery in 1964. He did junior posts at the Chelmsford and Essex Hospital, and then became a registrar at St Stephen's Hospital in London in 1966. He returned to Sri Lanka in 1969. He developed an interest in gynaecology and, after working in this field as a consultant from 1969 to 1972, emigrated to Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia, where he became a consultant. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1979 and two years later a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He died in June 1999.
