Details
Basil John Steele Grogono was a professor of surgery at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was born in Risbridge, Suffolk on 9 December 1922, the son of Jonathan Grogono, medical officer of Epsom College, and Sissy Grogono née Steele. He had an identical twin brother, Geoffrey Russell Steele Grogono. Their maternal grandfather, Russell Steele, was a doctor in Reigate. Both brothers attended Epsom College and then went on to study medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London. Geoffrey Grogono became a GP in Weymouth, Dorset. After qualifying, Basil Grogono went into the Army and worked as a surgeon in Palestine at the end of the Second World War. Once he returned to the UK, he trained as an orthopaedic surgeon in Oxford. In 1959 he emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Here he specialised in the rehabilitation of paraplegic patients. He was also an early supporter of wheelchair sports and travelled the world as medical officer of the Canadian Olympic wheelchair sports team. He later became an orthopaedic surgeon at Halifax Infirmary, Nova Scotia and professor of surgery at Dalhousie University. He then became a surgeon at Yellowknife’s Stanton Territorial Hospital and finally at King Edward VII Hospital in Bermuda. He was interested in many sports, including golf and tennis. He was an avid reader, wrote poetry and studied chemistry at the age of 75. Basil Grogono died at home in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 12 October 2015 at the age of 92. He was survived by his widow Sonia, whom he met in Oxford, four children (Stella, Clive, Alice and Matthew), 17 grandchildren (two others predeceased him) and three great grandchildren. His twin brother predeceased him in 2010.
