John Brian Anchen was born on 4 January 1929 in Bairnsdale, Victoria, Australia, the third child of John Oscar Anchen, a school inspector, and Eileen Anchen née Croagh. He was educated at St Kevin's College, Toorak, Melbourne, and then went on to study medicine at Melbourne University. He qualified MB BS in 1952.
He gained the fellowships of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh in 1959, and subsequently returned to Australia.
In 1963 he married Joan Claire Murphy. They had a son and a daughter. He died on 8 December 2011 at the age of 82.
