Alan Jessup was a visiting surgeon at Concord Hospital, Burwood, New South Wales. He was born on 12 December 1928 in Eastwood, New South Wales, the son of Edgar Harold Jessup, a carpenter, and Margaret Gertrude Jessup née Cummings. He attended Marsfield Primary School and was then selected to go to Fort Street Boys’ School, Sydney. He went on to Sydney University, where he qualified in medicine in 1950. He spent two years at Sydney Hospital as a resident medical officer and then, deciding he wanted to train in surgery, went to London for three years. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1955. He returned to Sydney the following year, where he was an honorary surgeon at the Western Suburbs Hospital until its closure in 1992. He also held an appointment as a visiting surgeon at Sydney Hospital from 1959 to 1978. He later transferred to Burwood, New South Wales, and became a visiting surgeon at Concord Hospital until his retirement in 1997. He enjoyed cricket, rugby, horse racing, gardening and English literature. In 1951 he married Naree Jean Palmer. They had eight children. She died in 1973 and in 1974 he married Topsy Ann Sproule. Alan Jessup died on 12 November 2018 at a nursing home in Drummoyne, New South Wales. He was 89.
