Born on 8 December 1886 the son of William and Lucy Sutton Simmonds, he was educated at Bancroft's School, the Middlesex Hospital and St Bartholomew's, qualifying in 1910. He served as house physician, house surgeon and casualty officer at the Middlesex Hospital, and then went into general practice till 1915, when he was commissioned in the RAMC and served in France and England until the end of the war in 1919, as a surgical specialist with the rank of Captain. He was a surgeon to the Ministry of Pensions 1920-25, and was appointed assistant surgeon to the West London Hospital in 1921 becoming ultimately consulting surgeon. He was surgeon to Hounslow Hospital 1924-46 and to Maidenhead Hospital 1941-51. During the second world war he was surgical adviser to sector 7 of the Emergency Medical Service (Ministry of Health) and continued till 1947. He was a member of the council of King Edward's Hospital Fund for London. Sangster Simmonds was a keen Freemason and an active member of the Drapers' Company. He was Master of the Company 1950-52 and bequeathed to it half the residue of his large fortune, after various personal and family bequests. His recreations were golf, tennis, and winter sports. He married in 1914 Elsie Mary Barwell who survived him. He practised at 124 Harley Street and later at 86 Brook Street, and lived at Down End, Hindhead. He died suddenly, while travelling in South Africa, on 3 September 1953, aged 66 and was cremated at Cape Town. A memorial service was held at St Michael's, Cornhill on 14 October. Sangster Simmonds was a large, imperturbable, conscientious man of enquiring mind and entertaining conversation.
