Richard Pelham Warren was born on 2 October 1919, the second son of Richard Warren DM, MCh, FRCS (*Lives of the Fellows*, 1952-1964, p.429) assistant surgeon to the London Hospital and later surgeon to Weston-super-Mare Hospital, and his wife Violet Irene, née Jenkin. His early education was at Charterhouse which had been his father's school and which he entered in the autumn of 1932. In 1936 he entered the London Hospital Medical College for his clinical studies, qualifying with the Conjoint Diploma in 1941. Shortly afterwards he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and attained the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander. After demobilisation in 1945 he passed the London MB examination and within two years had also passed the FRCS. He served as senior surgical registrar at the London Hospital, resident surgical officer at St Mark's Hospital in 1955 and later as assistant director of the surgical unit of the London Hospital, before being appointed consultant surgeon, initially at Poplar Hospital and later at St Margaret's Hospital, Epping, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, and Waltham Abbey War Memorial Hospital. He served as surgical tutor and was an enthusiastic teacher of junior staff and students with a special interest in surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract. He served as President of the Essex Branch of the British Medical Association, and was a liveryman of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries which he joined in 1957. In 1952 he married Eileen Mary Rowley, daughter of the Reverend Arthur TF Rowley MRCS, and there were three daughters and one son of the marriage. He died suddenly on 14 July 1986, aged 66, and is survived by his wife, four children, Caroline, Christopher, Penelope and Kate and three grandchildren, William, Alexa and Roland.
