Details
Marx Wald was a general surgeon at the Royal Perth Hospital. He was born in Sydney, the son of Solomon Marx Wald, a farmer, and Bell Marx née Nissenbau. He studied medicine at Sydney University, qualifying MB BS in 1955. He held junior posts at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and at the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania, and then joined the staff of the Royal Perth Hospital in 1956. From 1957 to 1959 he was in the UK, where he worked as a surgical registrar in Chelmsford and Colchester, and at Fulham Hospital, London. He returned to the Royal Perth Hospital, where he remained on the staff until his retirement in 1996. He was a general surgeon, but maintained an interest in hepato-biliary surgery. He was chairman of the department of general surgery at the Royal Perth Hospital from 1986 to 1991. He also held appointments at the Mount, St John of God Subaico and Bentley hospitals. He was the Western Australian representative at the Australian Association of Surgeons from 1972 to 1976. He was chairman of the state committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons from 1974 to 1976. Outside medicine, he enjoyed golf, bridge, reading, music, gardening and travel. In 1957 he married Diana Blythe. They had four children. One daughter, Claudia, is a psychiatrist. Marx Wald died on 26 August 2013.
