Ivor Barwell-Clarke was a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. He was born on 25 December 1920 in Cardiff, the son of Uriah Barwell Clarke and Mary Elizabeth Clarke née Williams. His father died in October 1925. Barwell-Clarke graduated from the National School of Medicine in Wales in 1944. He served in the Second World War. In 1949, he gained his FRCS and in the same year married Helen Joyse Built, a radiographer. In 1952, they emigrated to Canada and moved on to the west coast in 1955. He returned to the UK to train in plastic surgery at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, and during this time his wife and three children lived in New Zealand for two years with relatives. They were reunited in Vancouver in 1964 and settled in New Westminster, British Columbia. Here he was appointed to the Royal Columbian Hospital and St Mary’s and Surrey Memorial hospitals. Barwell-Clarke gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and became a member of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons. He was president of the Northwest Society of Plastic Surgeons in 1981, hosting their annual scientific meeting in Vancouver. He retired from clinical practice in approximately 1990 and died on 13 December 2001 aged 80. He was survived by his widow and their three children – Janet, Jonathan and Alan.
