He went on to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England on 17 June 1840 and a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries of London in 1843. On 8 June 1859 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He also gained a licence in midwifery in Dublin. He was a fellow of the Obstetrical Society of London. For most of his career he worked from a practice on the High Street in Eccleshall. In September 1860, listed as ‘gentleman’, he became an honorary assistant surgeon to the Staffordshire Rifle Volunteer Corps. In April 1850 he married Anne Buckley. They had five children: Arthur, Jane Kathleen, Archibald Stewart, Frederick Buckley and Edith Mary. Hawthorne died on 20 January 1866 of ‘apoplexy’, according to his *Lancet* death notice, aged 46. He was survived by his wife and children.
