Details:
Lo Wan Shun was born on 1 October 1928 in Hong Kong into a family of seven sisters and one brother. His father, Lo Ying Kwan, was a renowned practitioner of Chinese herbal medicine who was attached to the Hong Kong University faculty of medicine. He graduated in medicine and surgery in 1956 and practiced in Hong Kong before travelling to the UK in 1961, where he passed the fellowship of the college in 1963. On his return to Hong Kong he was appointed senior cardiothoracic surgeon to the public hospitals and established a cardiothoracic unit at Kowloon Hospital. At the hospital he was a mentor to his colleagues and also improved morale and wellbeing by organising such activities as an annual sports day. He founded the Hong Kong Archery Association and promoted the sport widely. He retired from Kowloon Hospital in 1980 but continued his private practice for a further 10 years. He had married Yuen Yu in 1960 and when he retired the couple decided to emigrate to Canada to be near their son. Pursuing a very active retirement he travelled extensively, played tennis three times a week, and built a soundproof studio in his basement to improve his enjoyment of classical music. He was also very knowledgeable about cars and studied photography with a photographic club and spending hours meticulously editing his digital pictures. He died at Sunnybrook Hospital on 4 January 2020 aged 91 survived by his wife, his son Hubert, daughter-in-law Mabel and grandchildren Kaitlin and Andrew.
