Grant Burkhill Williams was born in Birkenhead on 31 December 1932. He was the third child and only son of Edward Williams, a timber importer, and his wife Sybil née Baker, who was a grocer’s daughter. After attending Bedford School he studied medicine at London University and the London Hospital Medical School, graduating MB, BS in 1957. He did house jobs at the London, the Institute of Urology and the Royal Marsden Hospital. During this time he was mentored by Clive Butler, Alan Parks, John Blandy, Gerald Tresidder, David Wallace and David Innes Williams. He passed the fellowship of the college in 1961.
To continue his medical studies he travelled to the USA and enrolled at Harvard University, where he acknowledged the influence of Francis D. Moore, Joe Murray and R. E. Wilson. While in America he also held a research fellowship in transplantation at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. On his return to the UK he was appointed consultant urological surgeon to the Charing Cross, Royal Marsden and Chelsea and Kensington Hospitals. After retirement he continued to work for the Harley Street Clinic and as a medical consultant to HM Inspector of Prisons. A JP, he was also a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the International Society of Urology. He was the author of numerous papers on urology and transplantation.
Outside medicine he enjoyed listening to music and growing orchids. He married Ms Armsworth in 1957 and they had four daughters and a son. On 27 February 2020 he died aged 87.
