Bruce Jeremy Maitland Innes was a clinical professor of surgery at Mercer University School of Medicine, Macon, Georgia, USA. He was born in Cambridge, UK, on 1 May 1934. His father, James Robert Maitland Innes, was a distinguished pathologist; his mother was Margery Innes née Morris. He moved with his family to Washington DC in 1948, when his father took up a post as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health. Innes attended the Woodrow Wilson High School in DC, and then studied medicine at McGill University, Montreal.
He completed his surgical residency at Montreal General Hospital and went on to train in cardiothoracic surgery at Bellevue Hospital and Columbia University, New York. He held professional and academic appointments at the University of Virginia, Old Dominion University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, University of Florida, Mercer University School of Medicine and Trinity School of Medicine.
He was a founding faculty member of Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he was named chief of surgery. In 1981 he joined the Mercer University School of Medicine as a clinical professor of surgery, and in 1994 was appointed director of undergraduate surgical education. He was the assistant dean of clinical affairs at Trinity School of Medicine up until his death.
In 1958 he married Barbara Jacks. They divorced in 1982. Innes died on 6 July 2017 at the age of 83. He was survived by his four children – Robert, Robin, David and Michael – four grandchildren, and former wife.
