Anthony Gordon Tyers, known as *Tony*, studied medicine at London University and trained at Charing Cross Hospital, where he began his medical career as a house surgeon after graduating MB, BS in 1970. Beginning to specialise in ophthalmology he moved to Moorfields Eye Hospital and worked as a registrar both there and at the Middlesex. He was eventually appointed consultant ophthalmologist and ophthalmic plastic surgeon to the Salisbury District Hospital. Various other organisations were supported by him including the Order of St John. During his career he held fellowships in oculoplastic surgery at Boston, Amsterdam and Moorfields. He served as president of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and of the British Oculo-Plastic Surgery Society. His book, the *Colour Atlas of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery*, co-authored with Richard Collin, published in the third edition in December 2007, was awarded *Medical Book of the Year 2008* by the Royal Society of Medicine and the Society of Authors, UK and is now in its fourth edition. He was remembered by his colleagues for his exemplary thoroughness, quiet and thoughtful attention to detail and his kindness and was a great teacher.. During his last years he bore a progressive illness with characteristic strength and resilience. When he died on 24 April 2020 he was survived by his wife and family.
