Frederick William Connaughton was a surgeon in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He was born on 13 October 1912 in Perth, Western Australia, the son of Fergus Connaughton and Catherine Connaughton née Kilmartin. He studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, during which time he enlisted with the Melbourne University Rifles in 1931 for three years. He qualified MB BS in 1936. He held house posts and a registrar appointment at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, and then went to the UK to train in surgery. He was a house surgeon at Southend General Hospital and then a resident surgical officer at St Mark’s Hospital, London. He gained his FRCS in 1940. On 30 January 1942 he joined Second Australian Imperial Force, leaving as a major. He returned to Australia as a general surgeon. In 1949 he married Joan Gwendoline McCardel in Victoria, Australia. Connaughton died on 13 September 2002. He was 89.
