Stanley Frederick Hans was a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in Hertford and Epping. He was born on 24 July 1920, the son of John Ferdinand Hans and Kathleen Charlotte Hans née Stidworthy. He studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School and qualified with the conjoint examination in 1942, spending the early part of the war in Cambridge, where the medical school had been evacuated.
He was a house physician at Barts, and then a casualty officer and house surgeon in the obstetrics and gynaecology department at the East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital. He moved to St Mary’s Hospital, Portsmouth, where he was a senior resident medical officer. He then went back to Barts, as an acting research assistant in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology. He gained his MD in 1947 and became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1948 and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1952. He was subsequently appointed to his consultant posts at Hertford and Epping.
He wrote papers on ‘Pelvic contraction due to idiopathic steatorrhoea’ (*J Obstet Gynaecol Br Emp*. 1947 Oct;54[5]:663), ‘Braided tantalum wire’ (*Lancet*. 1952 May 10;1[6715]:949-50), ‘Improved iliac-crest supports’ (*Lancet*. 1952 Oct 4;2[6736]:664), ‘Dysgerminoma in association with exfoliative dermatitis and febrile episodes’ (*Postgrad Med J*. 1953 Jul;29[333]:367-9) and ‘Methyldopa in treatment of severe toxaemia of pregnancy’ (*Br Med J*. 1964 Mar 21;1[5385]:736-9). He also held a patent for an improved pelvic support for use on a surgical table.
In 1943 he married Nora F Twomey. Stanley Frederick Hans died on 28 April 2012. He was 91.
