Grahame Henson was a surgeon at the Culpeper Memorial Hospital, Virginia, USA. He was born on 14 April 1921 in Cardiff, Wales, the son of Archibald Bullock Henson and Doris Kathleen Henson née Small. He was educated at Ellesmere College and then studied medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1943.
He was a house surgeon in the Emergency Medical Service at Harefield Hospital and East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, and a casualty officer at Ancoats Hospital, Manchester. He later served as a captain in India and Africa. On his demobilisation, he was a senior surgical registrar at Ashford Hospital. He gained his FRCS in 1949.
He emigrated to the United States, becoming a surgeon and clinical instructor at the University of Virginia Hospital at Charlottesville. He the first specialist at Culpeper Memorial Hospital, where his practice spanned 29 years.
In 1945 he married Joan Short in Manchester, UK. They had four children: Geoffrey, Rosalind, Christine and Adrian. After divorcing in 1983, he married June. Henson died on 17 July 2005 at the age of 84 and was survived by his wife, children, two stepchildren, 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
