John Edward Howson was a surgeon in Victoria, Australia. He was born in County Durham, the elder son of John Howson and Elise Mary Nicholson née Howson. He attended Barnard Castle School and then the medical school at King’s College, Newcastle. He qualified in 1948 with a distinction in surgery. As a medical student he played rugby for his university.
He was a house surgeon on the professorial surgical unit at Royal Victoria Infirmary and then carried out his National Service. He gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1954.
He emigrated to Australia, where he was an honorary surgeon at Sale Base Hospital, Victoria. He subsequently became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Radiologists.
In 1949 he married Mary Barker, a teacher. Howson died on 21 January 2005 in Melbourne. He was 80.
