William Leo Kermond was an orthopedic surgeon at Winchester and Massachusetts General hospitals, Massachusetts, USA. He was born on 28 October 1923 in Victoria, Australia. He studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and qualified in 1947. After junior posts, he went to the UK for further training and gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1952. He emigrated to the United States, where he was an orthopedic surgeon at Winchester Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of the Harvard medical school faculty. He was naturalised as an American citizen in 1962. He was involved with Por Cristo, a medical charity which provided orthopaedic training and services to Ecuadorian doctors and patients. Outside medicine he enjoyed golf, tennis, flying and sailing. In 1954 he married Evelyn Conway in Boston. They had five children, Ellen, Peter, Richard, Justin and Louise, 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Kermond died on 18 February 2012 at the age of 88.
