Details:
David Campbell Glenn was born on 31 January 1931 in Australia and began studying medicine at Sydney University in 1948, graduating MB, BS in 1955. After house appointments at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) he gained the fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 1959. While spending time as a surgical registrar to the late Sir John Loewenthal he began teaching surgery to undergraduates and discovered he had an enviable gift for imparting knowledge and making the process a pleasant experience. He then spent some time in the UK, during which he passed the fellowship of the college in 1960. Returning to Sydney the following year, he was appointed honorary surgeon to the RPAH remaining there and teaching at the University of Sydney. He achieved some outstanding advances in the field of colorectal surgery in which he was a pioneer. At the Royal Australian College of Surgeons he served on the court of examiners for 12 years. In 1997 the university awarded him the master of surgery *honoris causa*. He died on 9 April 2018 aged 87.
