Details:
Arthur Joseph Day was born on 2 January 1933 in Melbourne, Australia. He was the son of Arthur Day, a dermatologist who served as a medical officer in the first world war from 1914-1918. His mother, Muriel née Barnard, was a nurse who also served in the war in France and in Egypt. She worked as a Bush nurse in the Australian outback. From 1939 to 1951, Arthur was educated at the Church of England Grammar School in Melbourne where he became vice captain of boats, a prefect and a house captain. He entered Melbourne University Medical School in 1952 after doing his national service and graduated MB,BS in 1957. The following year he commenced a series of house jobs at various Melbourne hospitals, beginning with the Alfred Hospital, then the Royal Children’s Hospital and after that the Royal Women’s Hospital from 1960 to 1962. He then spent a year as a gynaecological registrar at the Royal Melbourne Hospital before travelling to the UK. He worked for two years from 1964 at Queen Mary’s Hospital for the East End in London and passed the fellowship of the college in 1965. On his return to Melbourne he joined the staff of Monash University department of gynaecology as a senior lecturer in 1967. The following year he was appointed gynaecologist to the Queen Victoria Medical Centre and remained there until 1986. He then became specialist in charge of the gynaecology unit and the gynaecological oncology unit (which he founded) at the Monash Medical Centre and was promoted to a more senior post in 2000, eventually retiring in 2006. From 1970 to 1991 he was also consultant gynaecologist to the Mental Health Authority of the State of Victoria. Highly active in his profession, he was on the council of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists from 1978 to 1983, served a term as their secretary and was awarded the president’s medal. Among several other organisations, he was also on the council of the Medical Defence Association of Victoria from 1984 to 2006. Committed to helping less fortunate countries, he managed to establish a cervical cancer screening programme in Sri Lanka which was to be responsible for saving many lives. He was a leader in the field of gynaecological oncology and was known as an inspiring teacher. In a note attached to his cv form he wrote that *The obtaining of a general surgical fellowship for an Australian gynaecologist was relatively rare. It however made all the difference to my career as I was able to practice and teach good surgical principles – not found in normal O&G training. I started the gynaecological oncology unit at Monash, and it is now one of the leading units in Australia – not due to me but due to the excellent people that I managed to get to work with me and eventually take over the unit.* Outside medicine he enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was an expert farmer specialising in the breeding of mohair goats. He married Hilary, a microbiologist, in 1963. They had four children: Katherine Jane (Kate) (born 1964), a nursing sister who sadly predeceased him, Meredith Robin (b.1965) a medical practitioner, Arthur William (b.1967) a mechanical engineer and Charles Robert (b.1971) a chemical engineer. When he died on 25 May 2020 aged 87, he was survived by his wife, his three remaining children and grandchildren, Tom, Sarah, William, Harry, Sophie, Lachlan, Marguerite, Richard, Elizabeth, Jessica, Joshua and Campbell.
