Details:
Charles William Rowse was a consultant in oral surgery at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. He was born at Battle in Sussex on 7 March 1938, the son of Laurence Joseph Rowse, a schoolmaster, and Mona Rowse née Robinson. The family later moved north to Wakefield, where his father became a headmaster. Charles was educated at Goole Grammar School in the East Riding, where he became head boy. Goole was co-educational and, whilst he was there, he went to help one of the girls put up Christmas decorations in the school. The girl was called Elizabeth Crapper and at the time of his death in 2022 she and Charles were two days short of their 59th wedding anniversary.
He qualified in dentistry at Durham, which at that time was still associated with Newcastle, and, following house posts, became a registrar at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead. From there he moved to Sheffield, where he completed his senior registrar training under Sir Paul Bramley.
Charles was then appointed at a fairly young age to a consultant oral surgery post at Singleton Hospital in Swansea. He initially had only one senior house officer to help him at the busy unit. At that time, at the north end of the city at Morriston Hospital, there was a second consultant oral surgeon again aided by one senior house officer. The two units were subsequently combined to form a single oral surgery unit. A registrar was appointed to help the busy service which, although centred in Swansea, also provided peripheral clinics in Llanelli, Carmarthen, Haverfordwest and Aberystwyth.
Charles became an active member of the Oral Surgery Club of Great Britain, becoming president in 1997. He arranged a successful visit that year for the members of the club to visit Egbert Machtens at the maxillofacial unit in Bochum in Germany. During the final stages of his clinical career, the specialty of maxillofacial surgery was developing and Charles strongly supported the centralisation of the service to Morriston Hospital, with the unit eventually expanding to six consultant maxillofacial surgeons and a full supporting staff, laboratory and trainees, providing a wide range of major maxillofacial procedures.
Charles was an accomplished yachtsman and was the commodore of the Swansea Yacht and Sub Aqua Club based in Mumbles. He owned various yachts over the years, often favouring Westerlys. Under his command, various senior house officers earned their sea legs crewing for him.
Following his retirement, Charles and Elizabeth moved down to Salcombe, Devon, so that he could continue with his sailing activities and they could be closer to their family. He was a dedicated family man and was proud of his daughter Janet, son Mark and the two grandchildren. Sadly, Charles had to give up sailing as his health deteriorated but he became an accomplished birdwatcher, enjoying time in the countryside and nearby coastline. He died on 4 March 2022 aged 83.
