Eric John Rowland Morgan was a consultant dental surgeon at Morriston Hospital, Swansea. Born on 14 January 1923, he first studied dentistry at the University of Bristol on a Kitchener scholarship and qualified with a BDS in 1946. He subsequently qualified in medicine, also from Bristol, in 1954. He gained his fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1957.
He was appointed as a consultant dental surgeon in Swansea and built up dental and oral surgery provision in south west Wales; he was instrumental in setting up a new maxillofacial unit at Morriston Hospital.
He retired in 1987 and returned to study, gaining an MPhil and PhD in history from University College Swansea, then part of the University of Wales.
In 1949 he married Jean Elizabeth Morrell, a doctor who had also graduated from the University of Bristol. Morgan died on 17 December 2018 from pneumonia, old age and type two diabetes. He was 93. Predeceased by his wife, he was survived by their daughter, Caroline, and two grandchildren, Isobel and Patrick.
