Details:
Jeffery Samuel Rose was a consultant orthodontist at the London Hospital. He was born in Harrow on 22 December 1924. He was an outstanding student at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, where he was captain of boxing, and went on to study dentistry at Guy’s Hospital.
From 1946 to 1949 he served in the Royal Air Force at Duxford as a dentist with the rank of flight lieutenant. Following his demobilisation, he started as a part-time lecturer at the London Hospital Medical College in the 1950s, as a junior to Harold Chapman, who co-founded the British Society for the Study of Orthodontics. He stayed at the London Hospital, becoming a senior lecturer and consultant, and developed the orthodontic course there. He was also a member of the hospital’s medical council, chairman of the dental committee and head of the maxillofacial department.
He was on the organising committee of the World Orthodontic Conference in 1973, treasurer of the European Orthodontic Society and president of the British Orthodontic Society, after he played a major role in the unification of the five existing orthodontic societies.
In 1949 he married Joyce Bernstein. They had a son, Simon, and a daughter, Sunday. Rose died on 13 December 2018 at the age of 93.
