John Dennis Hugh McDonald was an orthodontist in Melbourne, Victoria. He was born on 25 November 1927 in Sherwood, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. His parents were Hugh Callum McDonald and Lilian Margaret Janetta McDonald née Muirhead. He attended Brisbane State High School.
McDonald gained his fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1965.
