Details:
Jeremy Alan Sherman was a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Welwyn Garden City, and Luton and Dunstable Hospital. He was born on 2 June 1959 in London, the son of Philip Sherman and Gina L Sherman née Adamson and was educated at the City of London School. He went on to King’s College to study dentistry and qualified with a BDS in 1981.
He trained in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Edinburgh and London before going to Manchester to complete a medical degree, gaining his MB ChB in 1990 and his fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1992. He was a senior registrar at Guy’s, Ipswich and Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge, becoming a locum consultant at the latter.
In 2000 he was appointed to his consultant post in Welwyn Garden City and the Lister Hospital in Stevenage. As well as running a singlehanded service at Welwyn, in 2004, with five colleagues, he helped found the Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire maxillofacial network. His broad practice included parotid, orthognathic and trauma surgery, temporomandibular joint disorders, implants and oral medicine. He also established an award winning, minimally invasive salivary gland service, a subject on which he lectured internationally, and greatly improved local services to GPs.
Teaching and supervision were major interests. From 2005 he was an examiner for the membership examination of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and for the membership in general dental surgery. He was an adviser then regional specialty professional adviser for the east of England region at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Outside medicine, he enjoyed music, hi-fi and gadgetry, film and memorabilia, skiing and tennis. Sherman died from pancreatic cancer on 22 January 2013 at the age of 53 and was survived by his wife Jacqueline (née Topping), whom he married in 1998, and two daughters.
