Details:
Hans Gustav Kurer was a dental surgeon in Manchester who made a substantial contribution to the development of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Kurer was born in Austria on 20 April 1929, the son of Jacques Kurer, a dentist, and Theodora (or Dora) Kurer. In 1938 Jacques was one of 40 Austrian refugee dentists permitted to enter the UK following a review by the Home Office. He moved with his wife and two sons from Leinz, Vienna to Manchester with the help of a Quaker family, the Goodwins. Another Quaker family, the Maddocks, sponsored Jacques’ grandmother and parents, and Theodora’s sister and niece to leave Austria. Jacques had already qualified as a dentist in Vienna in 1925, but to practise in the UK he was required to gain a British dental qualification; he studied for the LDS at Manchester Dental School and, in 1939, set up a dental practice in Manchester. After being bombed out of the Goodwin’s home, the family moved to Llandudno in Wales in January 1941, before returning to Manchester in July 1944. Hans Kurer was educated at Bootham School in York, a Quaker boarding school, the fees initially paid by the Goodwins until his father’s practice was established. He went on to Manchester University’s dental school and qualified in 1953. Both he and his brother, Peter, also a dentist, joined their father’s practice in Manchester. In 1982 Kurer helped found the Society of General Dental Surgery, established within the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England to represent the interests of general dental practitioners, and served as the first vice chairman. In 1986, following increasing pressure for an independent college of general dental practitioners, the Advisory Board in General Dental Practice was established, with Kurer as chairman. And when the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners was created in 1992, he served on the first board. A fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England since 1990, Kurer became a fellow of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (ad eundem) in 2004. Kurer was married twice – in 1952 to Annelore Irene Grun and in 2004 to Valerie Kurer. He had a son, Julian, who became a dentist. He died on 17 August 2012 at the age of 83.
