Details:
Carol Mason was a consultant in paediatric dentistry at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. She studied dentistry at Manchester Dental School, following success during her school years, including a scholarship to Bury Grammar. She was awarded several prizes at dental school, including the prestigious Preston medal and graduated with honours in 1985. After qualifying, Carol held a number of posts, in general dental practice, in the community dental service and hospital house appointments, including as a senior house officer at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in 1987. This led to registrar posts in paediatric dentistry at Guy’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and the Eastman Dental Hospital, at which she was appointed a consultant in paediatric dentistry in 1995. Carol subsequently accepted a substantive consultant in paediatric dentistry position at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, a post she held for over 20 years, finally retiring for health reasons in 2019. Carol was involved in the teaching and examining of paediatric dentistry as a specialisation from early on in her career. She supervised junior trainees and postgraduates studying for University College London masters programmes in paediatric dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital, retaining a link with the Eastman when a consultant at Great Ormond Street. She is remembered by many trainees as a knowledgeable, supportive, kind and thorough teacher and fair, when acting as an internal or external examiner for the university. She regularly contributed to examination preparation and hands-on courses and lectured in a large variety of settings both at home and abroad, drawing on her experience managing severely medically compromised children and cleft lip and palate cases at Great Ormond Street. She held editorial referee positions with several respected medical and dental publications, including the *British Dental Journal* and the *International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry*. Carol had several significant roles at the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She was an examiner for the fellowship (from 1998 to 2003), for the membership (2001 to 2008) and the membership of joint dental faculties (2007 to 2016). Her significant contribution to the assessment process for specialisation in paediatric dentistry included as an examiner (1998 to 2011) and later chair of the bi-collegiate examining board (2003 to 2011) for the membership in paediatric dentistry and as a member of the development group for the tri-collegiate examination delivered on behalf of the London, Edinburgh and Glasgow Royal Colleges. She also examined for the intercollegiate specialty fellowship examination in paediatric dentistry for many years. Carol had active involvement with the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry throughout her career. This included supporting the local branch, the south east group, as a committee member, treasurer and auditor (from 1991 to 1996) and as the elected chair (in 2006). In 1989 Carol married Michael Escudier, now professor of oral medicine and education at King’s College, and together they welcomed Olivia in 1998. As a mother, Carol was able to demonstrate her talented, creative side producing marvellous costumes for school plays, amazing cake decorations and photo albums for major family milestones. As a devoted wife and mother Carol was hugely supportive and proud of Michael and Olivia. She was determined and delighted to see Olivia graduate from Durham in 2020 and convert her internships to substantive job offers and an established career. Carol was a very thoughtful and loyal friend to many, regularly organising outings or a coffee. In retirement she explored her interests, completing handicraft courses, including embroidery, millinery, jewellery making and spent many hours making beautiful gifts for family and friends, always accompanied by a handwritten note. To all her endeavours Carol brought humility, care and a sense of humour. In difficult times, following her diagnosis with cancer some years before her final passing, she is remembered as resilient and brave. Carol died on 10 March 2021. She was a warm and caring individual, a highly respected consultant in paediatric dentistry, dearly loved by her patients and their families. She is greatly missed; her passing is truly a loss to all who knew her.
