Air Vice Marshal John Maurice Jones was director of defence dental services. He was born on 27 January 1931, the son of E Morris Jones and Gladys Jones née Foulkes. He attended Liverpool Institute High School for Boys and then studied dentistry at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 1954. He held a junior post at the Liverpool Dental Hospital and then joined the dental branch of the Royal Air Force. Between 1955 and 1973 he held appointments in the UK and abroad, including Christmas Island, Malta, Cyprus and Fontainebleau. In 1973 he became deputy director of RAF dental services and then, from 1976, he was the officer in charge of the RAF institute of dental health and training. In 1979 he became the principal dental officer at the RAF headquarters in Germany and, in 1982, of RAF support command. From 1982 to 1988 he was director of RAF dental services and, from 1985 to 1988, director of defence dental services. From 1983 to 1987 he was the Queen’s honorary dental surgeon. He was awarded a companion of the bath in 1986. In the same year he became a fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Outside dentistry he enjoyed golf, fishing, skiing and squash. He was president of the RAF Squash Rackets Association from 1986 to 1988 and secretary of the Ski Club of Great Britain from 1988 to 1991. In 1962 he married Joan McCallum. They had a son and a daughter. Jones died on 2 February 2010 at the age of 79.
