Thomas Lionel Hookham was an oral surgeon in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He was born in October 1931 in New Zealand, the son of Horace Hookham and Clara Hookham née Tanner. He attended Whangarei Boys’ High School from 1943 to 1949 and went on to study dentistry, qualifying with a BDS degree.
In 1956 he joined the Royal New Zealand Navy on a short service commission as a surgeon lieutenant.
In 1963 he gained his fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He returned to New Zealand, where he was an oral surgeon at Palmerston North.
He married Patricia Mary Gregg (‘Patsy’) in 1961. They had four daughters: Jane, Sarah, Anna and Kate. Hookham died in April 2010 at the age of 78.
