Details:
Norma Timoney was a consultant cleft lip and palate surgeon and paediatric plastic surgeon at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust for 20 years. She was born in Dublin and attended Loreto College at Stephen’s Green prior to studying dentistry at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 1981.
Like many of her classmates, she then moved to London and, after a short period in practice, took up a dental job at the London Hospital, later moving to Bristol. She became a fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1986. She much preferred the hospital environment and proceeded to study medicine as a mature student at the University of Bristol, graduating in 1992. Following resident positions in Taunton, Exeter and Bristol, she undertook her specialist plastic surgical training in the West Midlands. After completing fellowships in paediatric plastic surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and in Japan, she took up her consultant post at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in 2005.
As a consultant, Norma worked tirelessly to improve cleft lip and palate services across the UK and to grow the paediatric plastic surgery department at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. She held positions across her career as the training programme director for plastic surgery in London and as chairperson of the Interface Training Committee for Cleft Lip and Palate. Given her dedication to training of surgical fellows over the last 20 years she trained almost 40% of all cleft consultants currently working in the UK. Norma has had a huge input in the current cleft lip and palate curriculum and how cleft training is delivered to the high standard it is today.
Norma was also an active member of both the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons and the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain and Ireland. She had a passion for teaching and training and was dedicated to helping trainees to achieve their full potential. This was reflected in the huge outpouring of gratitude and concern when Norma became unwell with endometrial cancer in June of 2024.
Norma also dedicated a huge amount of time and energy to her international cleft work. She served on the board of trustees for the Facing the World charity, with whom she travelled to several countries to perform surgery on children.
Given the creativity required for cleft lip and palate and ear reconstructive surgery that were Norma’s special surgical interests, it is no surprise really that her non-medical interests reflected some of that creative side. She was interested in many kinds of music, skilled at sculpture, an avid art gallery visitor, a legendary cook and had a fantastic fashion collection. She enjoyed spending time with her family during frequent return trips to Dublin and further afield. She travelled extensively with her charitable work and to conferences and liked to ski and to hike for pleasure.
Norma made an impact on so many lives and will be missed by all who knew her. She returned to Guy’s Hospital, as she had wished, where she passed away on 2 March 2025 in a place she knew and loved.
