Details:
Margaret Campbell-Wilson was a consultant orthodontist at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. She was born in Morcombelake, a small coastal village in Dorset, on 17 January 1931. Her father, Malcolm Scott Campbell Wilson, was an aircraft engineer and was seconded to Liverpool during the Second World War. Her mother was Daisy Campbell Wilson née Lister. Margaret was an energetic youngster and there are family memories of the park keeper complaining that she and some boys were seen climbing the trees in the local orchard! She continued an active life into middle age, learning to sailboard at a local reservoir. In her teens she had orthodontic treatment, in days when this was unusual, which no doubt started her on the road to her chosen career. Margaret trained at Liverpool University, obtaining her BDS in March 1955, having previously obtained a degree in physiology in 1952. She obtained her diploma in orthodontics in 1959 and became a fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1967. After a wide range of hospital jobs in Liverpool, Alder Hey, Great Ormond Street and the Royal Dental Hospital, she worked as an orthodontist in Hertfordshire before completing consultant training as a senior registrar at the Bristol Dental Hospital and taking up her consultant post in Derby. When she was appointed in 1970, she was the only qualified orthodontist in Derbyshire, which had a population of one million. In view of this shortage of orthodontic skills, Margaret understood that the only way to deliver care was to delegate treatment to local dentists. She organised training for general dentists and opened referral clinics where treatment plans were prepared following a thorough diagnosis and treatment which, where possible, was delegated to local dentists. Plans were influenced by her knowledge of the skill set of the referring dentist. Margaret introduced study groups and lectures attended by local dentists, many of whom enthusiastically developed their skills and greatly improved the accessibility and quality of orthodontic care in Derbyshire. If problems arose Margaret would see the patient and give advice, or take over, only occasionally scolding dentists for errors! Margaret chaired hospital and health service committees in the city and county, where her calm wisdom was much appreciated. Within the hospital she chaired the divisions of child health and surgical specialties. She was treasurer and president of the east Midlands branch of the British Dental Association and was made a life member of the Association in 2002. She served on national committees, in particular the British Society for the Study of Orthodontics. Margaret was a careful and precise dental surgeon who always paid much attention to human detail and was a skilled ‘wire bender’, schooled in the mysteries of the Watkin pin and tube appliance. She published research articles on a diverse range of subjects, including: the loss of teeth following orthodontic treatment (‘Post-treatment loss of teeth in a group of orthodontic patients’ *Br Dent J* 1969 Nov 18;127[10]:469-71); excavated skulls (‘Report on the occlusions and dentitions of a group of skulls excavated at a cairn cemetery in Fife’ *The dental practitioner and dental record* 1970 Vol 21 [2] pp 68-72); cleft lip and palate (‘A ten-year survey of cleft lip and cleft palate in the south west region’ *Br J Plast Surg* 1972 Jul;25[3]:224-8); the movement of the lower labial segment after the loss of first premolars (‘Preliminary investigation into the movement of the lower labial segment following loss of first premolars’ *Br J Orthod* 1975 Jan;2[1]:25-8); problems following orthodontic treatment (‘Some orthodontic pitfalls for the unwary’ *Dent Update* 1983 Nov-Dec;10[10]:613-4, 616-8, 620); and orthodontic screening in Derbyshire (‘Preliminary report on a restricted orthodontic screening programme in southern Derbyshire’ *Community Dent Health* 1985 Jun;2[2]:83-7). In 1992 Margaret retired, as a new era dawned in orthodontics, with a workforce of increased numbers of specialist orthodontists and dentists trained by people, like her, with skills in diagnosis and complex appliance therapy. In 2001 she obtained a master of arts degree in local and regional history from the University of Nottingham, during which she produced some fascinating, detailed essays. Her work with an archaeological group in Derbyshire, producing a book about Saddler Gate (a historic street near Derby Cathedral), volunteering at Sudbury and helping catalogue the extensive collection of items relating to children at Sudbury Hall, gave her immense pleasure. She spent her later years in Chester and was survived by her sister Monica and family. She died on 15 June 2025 aged 94. Maragret’s legacy has left the people of Derbyshire with access to previously unavailable dental care of a high standard, especially for those in greatest need.
