Details:
Ian Murray Grant was a consultant general surgeon in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and then the medical administrator of Vancouver General Hospital, British Columbia. He was born in Dundee, Scotland on 2 June 1921 and studied medicine at the University of St Andrews, qualifying in 1944.
He was a house surgeon at the Royal Infirmary, Dundee and then a junior registrar at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.
He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1945 to 1959, in India, Malaysia, Hong Kong and in the UK. In 1953 he gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and also a diploma in tropical medicine and health and the Montefiore prize for military surgery.
After leaving the Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he moved to Winnipeg, where he set up a general surgical practice, the Graham Medical Group. He was also chairman of the department of surgery at Miserconcordia Hospital, Winnipeg.
In 1979 he relocated to Tsawwassen, British Columbia, and became the medical administrator of Vancouver General Hospital, a post he held until his retirement in 1986.
He was an active member of many organisations, including the St Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg and the South Surrey Garden Club.
Grant died on 26 November 2012 at Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock, British Columbia, at the age of 91. He was survived by his wife Gail (née Oswald), their three sons, Bruce, Glen and Eric, and two grandchildren.
