Born in 1792, about 1809 and 1810 was a Surgeon's Assistant in the Royal Cumberland Militia, and in a General Military Hospital. Educated at Guy's Hospital, and practised at Sunnyside, Bishop Wearmouth, Sunderland, where at the time of his death he was Consulting Surgeon to the Sunderland Infirmary. He died on January 18th, 1856. His son, W B Ferguson, reported his death to the College in a letter dated June 2nd, 1856.

His father, a Birmingham merchant, ruined at the outset of the American War, was a Unitarian and a prominent member of the congregation of Joseph Priestley (1733-1804).
