Details:
Charles James Hume Logan was born in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland on 3 March 1931. He was the only child of Isaac Logan, a cattle dealer, and his wife Margaretta née Charles. After attending school in Lisburn, he finished his education at Campbell College in Belfast from 1944 to 1949. A keen sportsman, he represented the college by playing in their cricket and rugby teams and, while captain of the winning rugby XV in the schools cup, was to his lasting regret disqualified from playing due to a knee injury. He studied medicine at Queen’s University from 1949 and graduated MB, BCh, BAO in 1955. After working as a registrar at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Belfast City Hospital, he became a senior registrar at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. He passed the fellowship of the college in 1960 and in 1962 spent a year as a surgical fellow at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, USA. In 1968 he was appointed consultant general surgeon at the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald and remained there for 24 years until his retirement in 1992. He was responsible for founding their important breast clinic in 1980 and he also undertook several significant staff, tutoring and administrative roles. At Queen’s he was a clinical examiner for two sessions in the 1980’s and was also an examiner for the FRCS Edinburgh. He was on the council of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. Publishing widely in the medical literature, he also produced a book *Ulster Hospital – a short history* which was published by the Ulster Medical Society in 1987. A keen golfer all his life, at one time he had an excellent handicap. He was a vintage car enthusiast and extensively restored two MGs and two Lagondas. Antique collection was another passion, particularly old clocks, and he had a great respect for woodworking skills. He married Eileen Elizabeth Wallace on 2 August 1958 and she survived him along with their daughter, Karen Elizabeth, when he died on 5 March 2018, aged 87.
