Details:
John Jeffrey Price (known as Jeff) was a consultant general surgeon at Bradford Royal Infirmary and a senior lecturer in surgery at the University of Leeds. He was one of the youngest consultant general surgeons at the time, having been appointed at the age of 31, and one of the very few in the country to be accredited by both the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Jeff was born on 7 September 1942 in Mansfield, the son of Bevan Price and Constance Price née Haslam. He was educated at Mansfield Grammar School and was persuaded by his headmaster to stay on for the sixth form, after initially beginning work in a factory. He was admitted to Leeds Medical School in 1961 and qualified in 1965 with a rare honours degree. He had an outstanding academic career at medical school and in the final year was awarded the Mayo-Robson surgical prize. He also played football and cricket for the medical school first teams. His pre-registration post was in cardiothoracic surgery with Geoffrey Wooler at Leeds General Infirmary. He initially wanted to be a cardiothoracic surgeon and, with this in mind, he pursued training in the medical cardiac units at York and Hammersmith hospitals. Within three years of qualifying he had passed the MRCP examinations. Jeff’s surgical career started as a demonstrator in anatomy at Glasgow University, where he passed the primary fellowship of the RCS. His registrar posts were at Birmingham General Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, under the supervision of J L Collis and D M Morrissey. He successfully passed the FRCS examinations on his first attempt in 1971. Jeff was appointed as a senior surgical registrar to Leeds and Bradford hospitals, and within two years, in August 1973, he was appointed as a consultant general surgeon at Bradford Royal Infirmary. He replaced George Whyte Watson who, along with Robert Lowry Turner, had set up the first breast unit to use chemotherapeutic agents for breast cancer treatment. Jeff was a founding member of the Yorkshire Breast Cancer Group and contributed to numerous publications in breast cancer. He also set up combined colorectal clinics with consultant gastroenterologists for the management of difficult colorectal cases and was an accomplished thyroid and parathyroid surgeon. He was appointed as an honorary senior lecturer in surgery at the University of Leeds. In his personal life, Jeff and Jan Price had three much-loved children: William, Susannah and Dominic, all of whom survive him, with six grandchildren. Outside of surgery, Jeff's main interest was antiques and he became an accomplished scholar of antique furniture and porcelain. He moved into Coley Hall, Halifax, and renovated it to its former glory. He also restored the 120-acre farm along with the house. Jeff, along with his second wife Heather Whittaker, established one of the best-known Hereford cattle farms in Yorkshire. By using his knowledge of genetics, he created prime cattle, producing championship winning bulls in England. In retirement he also played golf well into his seventies. Jeff died on 7 April 2022 aged 79. He was extremely intelligent and an exceptional surgeon with a fantastic sense of humour, who will be greatly missed.
