John Clifford Newbold was born in Lincoln on 21 August 1911, the son of John Davidson Newbold and Annie Ethel Allpress Laws. He was educated at Bishop Stortford College, where he became head of the School and captain of swimming and rugby football. He went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obt
