Sudhansu Mohan Ghosh was professor of surgery at the Calcutta National Medical College, India. He was born on 7 March 1907 and was educated in East Bengal, where he gained a distinction in mathematics. He joined the Calcutta Medical College in 1925 and in 1931 successfully passed the primary fellowship examination held at Stanley Medical College in Madras. He travelled to the UK and in 1947 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He also served in the Indian Army in East Bengal and eventually became a major. From 1947 to 1952 he was a surgeon at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, Calcutta. In 1952 he was appointed to the Calcutta National Medical College as a professor of surgery, a post he held until 1968. Among other activities, he taught undergraduates and postgraduates and organised examinations. He was head examiner in surgery for Calcutta University. He was chairman of the Association of Surgeons of India’s (ASI) West Bengal state chapter from 1979 to 1981. An oration named in his honour is delivered at the annual conference of the West Bengal state chapter of ASI. Ghosh died on 29 May 1986. He was 79.
