He passed the fellowship of the college in 1951 and, the following year, was appointed consultant general surgeon to the Nairobi (Kenya) Hospital. Throughout his medical career he undertook various additional tasks. From 1975 to 1982 he was casualty supervisor at the Nairobi Hospital. He became external examiner in surgery to the University of Nairobi in 1977, held the post of chairman of the joint advisory committee for the provision of private healthcare Kenya from 1997 and was on the board of directors of the Nairobi Hospice from 1996. A member of the Association of Surgeons of East Africa, he was also a member of the International College of Surgeons and at the BMA he was honorary secretary of the Kenya branch from 1954 to 1966. Deeply religious, he was senior steward at the Lavington United Church, Nairobi, from 1984 to 1985 and chapel steward, from 1992. His varied interests included photography, gardening, studying nature, camping safaris and writing on early local medical history. On 31 August 1946 he married Sheila Una O'Toole and they had four children; Anthony, Brian, Alison Rosemary Maine and Amanda Christine Dutoit. After her death he married Regina Kalile Ipopo on 4 August 1975 and there were two children Arune Salma Hicks-Ngare and Alan Ambokile.
