Robert (Bob) Britten-Jones was a senior visiting surgeon at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia. He was born in Adelaide on 9 June 1928. His father, Thomas Alan Britten Jones, was a consultant general surgeon at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His mother, Adeline May Britten Jones née Lewis, who came from a family of pastoralists, died when he was just six months old. He was educated first at St Dominic’s in North Adelaide, then at the Christian Brothers’ College, Rostrevor, in Adelaide and subsequently as a boarder at Xavier College in Melbourne. He went on to study medicine at the University of Adelaide, qualifying in 1952 as a William Gardner scholar (for first place in surgery in the final year) and an Everard scholar (for best the overall performance in the MB BS exams). He rowed at Xavier and also for the University of Adelaide. He went to the UK for further training, where from 1956 to 1959 he was a surgical registrar at St James’ Hospital in Balham, working for Norman Tanner and Andrew Desmond. He gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1956. He returned to Adelaide, where he set up his own surgical practice alongside his father in the Liberal Club building on North Terrace. He was an assistant surgeon at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and then a senior visiting surgeon there from 1970 to 1998. At the University of Adelaide, he was a clinical senior lecturer in surgery from 1989 to 1998. He was head of the department of surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital for many years and was a pioneer in the use of laparoscopic surgery in South Australia. He was a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a member of the board of examiners. He was chairman of the South Australia Centre of the St John Ambulance Association from 1971 to 1986. In 1988 he was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia for his services to medicine and the community. Outside medicine he played golf, tennis and bridge and sailed. In 1961 he married Lucille Jost, a physiotherapist. They had four children – Mark, Anthony, Christine and Peter – and 12 grandchildren. Britten-Jones died on 4 May 2019. He was 90.
