Born at Redruth, the son of John Permewan and Jane Permewan née Thomas. Both his father and his older brother Arthur Edward Permewan were medical practitioners. He studied at University College Hospital, and was then Resident Surgeon to the Miners’ Hospital, Redruth. In 1887 he went to Liverpoo
