Born 8 September 1877, second son of James Turner, a banker, and Evelyn Grey, his wife. He was educated at a private school at Newcastle-on-Tyne and at the Newcastle Medical School of the University of Durham, where he was Heath scholar and graduated with first-class honours in 1898. After further w
