Educated at the London Hospital, he came under the influence of Dr Barnado, who was then prominent in his Christian relief work in the East End. Born on 8 December 1886 the son of William and Lucy Sutton Simmonds, he was educated at Bancroft's School, the Middlesex Hospital and St Bartholomew's, qualifying in 1910. He served as house physician, house surgeon and casualty officer at the Middlesex Hospital, and then went into general practice
