James Gaymer Jones was born at Upper Norwood, London, on 26 August 1891. His father was also an MRCS. He was educated privately and at the West Ham Technical Institute from whence he proceeded to Guy's Hospital in 1910. He gained many prizes in anatomy and physiology. In July 1914 he was mobilised into the Special Service Section of the Territorials but was released in December 1914 to qualify, which he did in 1916. He joined the RAMC in 1916 with the rank of Captain and was awarded the MC in 1918 as an immediate award in the field as an order of the day. He served in the Home Guard in 1943-44. He returned to Guy's after the war, becoming senior surgical registrar. In 1924 he was appointed consulting surgeon to Edenbridge War Memorial Hospital until 1926, when he took up the post of surgeon at King Edward VII Hospital at Windsor. He remained there for 30 years also working as a consulting surgeon to no fewer than eight of the surrounding hospitals. He was a senior fellow of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and President of the Windsor and District Medical Society. He was a magistrate and chairman of the bench at Windsor. Tennis and gardening were among his interests. In 1920 he married Nora Annie Crane and they had a son and daughter. On 27 December 1976 he died, aged 85 years.
