Details:
Owen David Morris, born in Port Madoc, Wales, on 24 February 1916, was the eldest son of John Morris, master mariner, and Mary Jones. He was educated at Port Madoc Grammar School and St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, where he qualified MRCS LRCP in 1939. He was the twenty-second member of his family to enter the medical profession. Following qualification he entered the RAMC and served as medical officer to the 3rd Battalion of the Welsh Guards. He was awarded the Military Cross at Monte Cerasola during the Italian campaign. He had previously been mentioned in despatches twice in Tunisia. He was made an honorary captain of the Welsh Guards in the field by the Regiment's Colonel. Following service in the RAMC he returned to London where he studied surgery both at St Bartholomew's and with Norman Tanner, obtaining his MB BS in 1946 and the FRCS Edinburgh in 1948. He was elected Fellow of the College ad eundem in 1961. He was appointed consultant surgeon to the Ashford Hospital, Middlesex, where he worked throughout his consultant life, and was appointed surgical tutor to the Staines group of hospitals until he was forced to take early retirement, due to failing sight. His swift surgical technique helped to keep waiting lists short, and the research students seconded to him at Ashford benefited from both his experience and his speed. His main interests were military history and rugby football. He was passionate about the Welsh language and known as a convivial host. He married Hilda, a state registered nurse, on 30 August 1940, and they had two sons and a daughter, none of whom entered the medical profession. He died on 17 August 1995.
