Michael Cudmore Furnell was a surgeon general in the Indian Medical Service and the principal of Madras Medical College. He was born in Ireland in July 1829, the son of Samuel Furnell and Mary Maria Furnell née Cudmore, of Cork, and was baptised at St Andrew’s Catholic Church, Dublin. Educated

He was at one time Acting Surgeon to the Brighton Hospital for Children and Medical Officer of the Brighton and Hove Provident Dispensary.
